L’Etiopia offre alcuni dei più interessanti Bird Watching in Africa. A causa della grande varietà di paesaggi, i diversi habitat degli uccelli si trovano in stretta vicinanza l’uno all’altro. Nel giro di pochi giorni di viaggio diverse regioni possono essere coperte e con le loro diverse specie di uccelli. Ornitologi sono attratti da questo paese per il suo gran numero di uccelli endemici, uccelli che si trovano difatti solo in Etiopia.
Un totale di 850 specie di uccelli si trovano in Etiopia, e più di 20 sono endemiche. Altre due o tre dozzine di uccelli sono quasi endemiche e si trovano solo in Etiopia e in Eritrea o nel triangolo di terra tra sud Etiopia, nord del Kenya e Somalia. E’ anche molto probabile che diverse altre specie di uccelli siano ancora da scoprire in questa regione. Recentemente, nel 1992 è stata trovato l’ala di un uccello precedentemente sconosciuto (il Nechisar Nightjar) nel Nechisar National Park.
